Artist Statement: Bells have been used as a means to call to congregate, but also to commemorate events or passings. Towers symbolize the importance or stature of the institution within a community. Our Bell Tower shows the importance of education in the Homewood-Flossmoor community, from the earliest documented school to our current nationally recognized high school. The sculpture is presented as a work in progress, symbolizing that education is not a procedure, but rather a process of growth; ongoing and fluid. Symbolically speaking, history can be seen in the shape of the composite timber (traditional, handmade iron spikes used in building historical structures), and in the precarious arrangement of the pieces that make the sculpture look as though it is still in the process of being built.
